Role of Group Update

The CFA/VFBV Role of Group Working Party is about to begin consultation on the review’s first phase; strengthening local command and control within CFA.

VFBV is looking to strengthen the role of Groups and recognise the important role Groups contribute to local command and control in decision making, which complements the Chief Officers focus on Mission Command, and decision making
at the lowest appropriate level.

Later phases of the review will look at the Group’s role in preparedness, prevention, training, recovery and the contribution it can make to building and utilising volunteer capacity.

The Working Party has drafted a framework for local command and control across CFA and has made recommendations on the role of the Group in level 1, 2 and 3 incidents, functions and authority to act in planning and preparedness,
response, and supporting local command and control. It has also looked at Group membership classifications and role and rank identification and markings.

The Working Party is due to present final recommendations through the CFA/VFBV Joint Operations Committee for the Chief Officer’s consideration by the end of November.
